54 books in 2016

I'm aiming to read 54 books this year, and this is where I'll chart my progress.

You can see my efforts from the previous two years here and here.

1. Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl: a memoir by Carrie Brownstein. Brownstein is best known as a member of Sleater-Kinney, but this isn't the usual sex and drugs and rock n roll excess story. Instead, she examines her life provoking questions such as how does our upbringing shape what we look for in music, and how can creativity be reconciled with "normal" life? Finished January 2016.

2. A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. Finished January 2016.

3. The Look of Love: The Life and Times of Paul Raymond, Soho's King of Clubs by Paul Willetts. Finished January 2016.

34. The Girls by Emma Cline.
I was completely memorised by this tale of the darker side of the 1960s. More than the violence, it's Cline's dissection of the bored, waiting for life to begin teenage mind - in all its weakness and power - that made this so transfixing for me. Finished July 2016.

35. Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie.
I read this after a trip to Croydon Airport - the glamorous gateway to the continent in the Christie era. A murder takes place on a flight to Croydon, and it's up to Poirot to deduce which of the wealthy passengers is responsible. It's filled with typical Christie twists and turns and, fittingly, given the wasp's involvement in the murder plot, a sting in the tale. Finished July 2016.
